Details About Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is an age related disease also referred to as a disease of aging. It occurs as a result of repeated daily stress on the spine and other major and minor injuries occuring occasionally. For many people degeneration of disc occurs gradually and is not a problem. However, in few cases, it eventually turns into chronic, severe and debilitating discogenic pain. Pain caused by a damaged intervertebral disc is generally referred to as discogenic pain.

Some people may suffer from degenerative disc disease without experiencing any symptom. While some may experience intense symptoms of degenerative disc disease that makes it difficult for them to perform their daily activities.

Symptoms of degenerative disc disease

Some of the common early symptoms include pain in the back that radiates to buttocks and upper thighs. Numbness or tingling in the foot or leg is also a symptom. Many patients feel that pain in severe while sitting. The reason is that discs bear more weight when the body is sitting.

Degenerative disc disease generally refers to a combination of spinal problems that begins with damage to the disc and gradually spreads to remaining parts of the spine.

Treatment of degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease can be treated by occupational or physical therapy, medications, special exercises, stem cell therapy, reducing weight and surgery.

Non surgical treatment options

With the help of proper lifting techniques, frequency and severity of pain can be reduced to a greater amount. Since reclining or kneeling is less painful than sitting, patients can learn how to position themselves so that pain is relieved. Patients should lift weight without bending their body. Steroids, NSAIDs and muscle relaxers may be helpful in relieving the pain.

Surgery is recommended when all other options have failed.
